Since my last post, I decided to buy Olivia Liang’s book The Lonely City and I have to say that I am hooked. This book explores in the way that Liang does best, by looking to the root of human emotions and putting them in written form. This is not unlike the type of writing I hope to do in this course, and she is very good at conveying it. Considering the place in my life that I am currently, this book was very important, and I appreciated and understood more than just what she was saying. One line stuck out in particular to me: “loneliness is hallmarked by an intense desire to bring the experience to a close; something which cannot be achieved by sheer willpower or by simply getting out more, but only by developing intimate connections.” This was something I related too greatly, and I think is something that as college students, we far too frequently find ourselves on the negative end of this emotional journey. I think that this book is something that we can all learn from.
